The Limitations of Liposuction

While some may believe liposuction can achieve anything, there are limitations to the procedure. As one of Melbourne’s leading liposuction clinics, we understand how important it is to provide our patients with an honest and realistic outlook of their results. Take a moment to read more about the limitations of liposuction here.

Tighten Loose skin

When it comes to targeted fat reduction and body contouring, liposuction can achieve incredible results. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for skin looseness or laxity. These conditions are usually the result of a variety of related factors including weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and even genetics. In fact, removing the layer of fat beneath the loose skin will often make it look worse.

Considering this, your doctor may recommend combining liposuction with a complimentary procedure such as abdominoplasty, more commonly known as the tummy-tuck. This can be performed during the same surgery and offers a fantastic solution to any loose or sagging skin.

Remove stretch marks

Stretch marks are common for anyone who has experienced a substantial gain or loss in weight. Forming on the dermis, a layer of skin directly under the outermost layer, these marks behave in a similar way to scars and are more or less permanent, although some may fade over time.

Remove cellulite

While cellulite can be a cause of embarrassment for many people, liposuction will do little to minimise these unsightly marks. Cellulite is caused by fat pushing up against the skin which is then exacerbated by the presence of fibers beneath the surface, pulling the skin down. The result is a dimpled and bumpy surface where smooth skin once was.

If you are looking to treat your thighs or buttocks, it is essential to understand that in some cases (e.g. people with loose skin) liposuction can make the appearance of cellulite worse.

Reduce weight

Despite a popular misconception, liposuction was not designed as a procedure for weight loss, and it can not be used as one. Those candidates best suited for the procedure will already be near their ideal weight and will be required to stabilize their weight before undergoing surgery. Liposuction is designed to reduce fat in specific areas, removing small bulges, that may ruin the contour or shape of your body. These little pockets of fat don’t weigh very much and won’t make much of a difference when you jump back on the scales.

Flatten rounded belly caused by Intra-abdominal fat

Our bodies store two types of fat, and unfortunately, liposuction is only designed to remove one of them. That is subcutaneous fat, a layer of fat that sits between our muscles and the surface of the skin. For some people, their weight is caused by an entirely different kind of fat known as intra-abdominal or visceral fat. This fat sits beneath our muscles and around internal organs and can often cause people’s belly’s to protrude. As visceral fat is located much deeper within the body, liposuction cannot remove it.

If you’re unsure what type of fat is causing you issues, there’s a simple way to find out. Try and pinch the area where you want to remove fat. If you can pinch the fat between your fingers, then liposuction can remove it.

Change your life

While liposuction can assist in fat reduction and help you contour your body, it isn’t a replacement for a healthy diet and good habits. In fact, a healthy diet and good habits are exactly what you’ll need if you want to maintain the results from the procedure. It’s also important to remember that while liposuction may help improve your body image, if you feel self-conscious, you need to work hard to take care of yourself inside and out.
